InVENTS - “An Integrated Series of Events for High-level Training on Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering, Controlled Drug Delivery and Related Emerging Fields”

The aim of InVENTS is to provide the advanced training of participants on the most recent achievements and future trends in the research domains dealing with biomaterials, regenerative medicine and drug delivery, contributing to form multidisciplinary “hybrid” researchers prepared to face the future scientific and technological challenges. These domains are of crucial economical, health and social importance to Europe. Therefore, InVENTS will provide advanced tools and knowledge to the participants as a way to enable them to be highly competitive and to play a leading role in the European research within the proposed field for the coming decades. Such ambitious goal can only be accomplished by means of guiding research, creating new industrial spin-offs and transferring know-how to an all new generation of highly educated “hybrid” researchers. In this context, InVENTS will promote high quality science in a coherent series of 9 events, namely 6 conferences in the fields of tissue engineering, drug delivery, biomineralization, biocompatibility, nanoselfassembly materials for biomedical applications and stem cells; and 3 practical courses focussed on tissue engineering, biocompatibility, and drug delivery. The combination of complementary topics of each event will form a coherent multidisciplinary formation path aimed at improving the attendee’s knowledge and skills required for conducting successful multidisciplinary research in disciplines such as tissue engineering or drug delivery. InVENTS will provide a comprehensive training to an all range of scientists, at different levels of formation. There is presently no way of obtaining such high level quality and updated training in EU, even by means of trying to combine courses offered by different Institutions and/or different conferences and scientific training courses. The scientific contents of the proposed series of events was designed to be the best possible within the different fields. Moreover it comprises a strong level of integration and a very experienced and ambitious coordination.

Furthermore, InVENTS aims to promote high quality science by:
• Addressing the latest evolutions in the most current challenging research topics in a series of Marie Curie Conferences (MCC), namely one in the actual scientific knowledge and recent R&D developments in the use of polymers and composites (especially biodegradable ones) on the new fields of tissue engineering, tissue regeneration and replacement applications; a second one covering the emerging developments on controlled delivery of bioactive agents and their therapeutic impact, a third one focussing biomineralisation mechanisms and bioactive materials; a fourth one focussing biocompatibility evaluation of biomaterials, an area necessarily present in all emerging biomedical fields; a fifth MCC dedicated to nano-selfassembly techniques used in biomedical applications, and finally by a sixth MCC covering the very important field of biomedical application of stem cells.

• Providing the necessary complementary practical training during three Marie Curie Practical Training Courses (MCPTC) in the areas of biocompatibility testing of biomaterials, polymer chemistry and controlled drug delivery methodologies, as well as in fabrication and characterisation of tissue engineering scaffolds.

Additionally, the scientific contents of the proposed series of events were designed to be the best possible within the different fields. Furthermore, InVENTS will be organized in a similar way to the Gordon research Conferences (GRCs) to support and encourage the participation of young scientists as way to allow them to establish initial scientific and personal contacts, as well as to promote discussions and the free exchange of ideas at the research frontiers of the biological, chemical and physical sciences.
